CHAPTER SIX

Lars

With Mandy’s help, the hotel grows closer and closer to opening, by the day. I expected it to take four solid months of work but somehow, after only a month of her managing the project, it seems we’ll be ready to open before the end of the summer.

We could open now with only the first floor operating or, at least, we could open once the new mattresses and bedding arrive. We should get twenty queen sets sometime today and sheets and comforters will arrive a day or so afterwards. Her skill in managing timelines is breathtaking, and yet she never seems to realize how good she is at her job.

She’s also very different when she is speaking with a contractor or a vendor than when she speaks to anyone else. Normally, she almost behaves as if someone is doing does her a favor just talking to her. When she pays for gas or buys a soda at the station, she acts as though she believes someone’s

just taking her money is a kindness beyond imagining. She behaves as though everyone would, of course, rather never have to see her, talk to her, or help her with anything.

However, when she speaks with vendors, she’s businesslike and clear about her expectations and she immediately understands the difference between a real challenge and an excuse. She handles them better than I might and, more importantly, knows which steps in the process are critical to prevent delays in other steps.

It’s remarkable to watch her and wonderful in every way. When I see her at work, it’s almost as if I see the woman she could be at all times, if she dealt with whatever it is she’s running from; whatever it is that makes her afraid.

One day, she and I are standing behind the front desk, adjusting the new furniture she had delivered and talking about whether or not it makes sense to refinish the countertop or whether we shouldn’t just replace it altogether. As we do, Kyle Browning comes in his wife, Tina. I haven’t seen them in a few months, and they’re good people.

Kyle says, “My God, you’ve done a remarkable job with this place, Lars!”

I shake my head and point to Mandy. “I owe it all to Amanda,” I say.

“She deserves all the credit.” I don’t know why I call her Amanda. I think I want to be the only person who calls her Mandy. I don’t know.

“Why didn’t you tell us you had a new little girl?” Tina says. To Mandy she says, “You’ve got the best Daddy in the mountains.” She looks at Kyle and says, “Except for my Daddy, of course.” She gives him a kiss on the cheek and says, “Daddy, can Amanda come over and play?”

“Honey, that’s enough now.”

“Please Daddy?” Tina asks, holding onto his hand and staring up at him with eyes filled with innocence and cuteness.

“Um,” I say. “Amanda works for me.”

All of the color drains from Tina’s face. What’s she’s done is the equivalent of outing someone, and she’s devastated.
